Well, rather than dwell on how different everything looked from the vantage point of late June 2016, let’s check out the list of galleries that will be exhibiting in Basel this year.
Some numbers: 291 galleries across all sectors—including 17 new galleries—from 34 different countries. The Galleries sector will have 226 exhibitors, including a spate of new inductees to this most marquee portion of the proceedings. Those newcomers include Campoli Presti, Pilar Corrias, dépendance, Luxembourg & Dayan, Salon 94, Susanne Vielmetter Los Angeles Projects, Canada, and Di Donna, among others.
Let’s go to the other sectors.
Edition gives you prints and limited edition works, including a special presentation by Brooke Alexander, Inc. of Robert Longo’s Men in the Cities (Frank, Gretchen, Eric, Cindy, Edmund, Anne) that will be jointly presented in the Spotlight sector.
Feature gives you curated projects from 32 different galleries. There are Max Beckmann prints at Jörg Maaß Kunsthandel. There are Stan VanDerBeek drawings and collages at The Box. There are Gordon Parks photographs of the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and ’60s at Jenkins Johnson Gallery. That last one sounds really good right now.
The Statements sector gives you young galleries staging projects with emerging artists. Chapter NY will have, as per the press release, “an orchestra-inspired ensemble of clay figure sculptures by Sam Anderson.” 47 Canal will host works by the duo of Amy Lien and Enzo Camacho. Real Fine Arts has 13 new works by Sam Pulitzer.
Specs for the other sectors remain to be seen. Gianni Jetzer—curator at large at the Hirschhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C.—will once again oversee the always exciting Unlimited sector. Samuel Leuenberger, of SALTS in Birsfelden, Switzerland, will again oversee Parcours, which features work installed in Basel’s lovely Münsterplatz. And the Cairo-based curator Maxa Zoller will again oversee the Film sector.
There’s no new information on Conversations and Salon yet. In the mean time, enjoy the Art Basel exhibitor list below.
